Grateful

The fact that I had 2 C-sections is a minor blip on my parenting screen. It's not what I'd hoped for, and certainly not what was in our elaborate and doula-inspired birth plan. But, you know, the boys came out fine and it does seem that they weren't going to come out any other way. Still, I find I have a hard time reading accounts of home births. They sound so wonderful - peaceful and powerful. Maybe it's jealousy, maybe it's hope dashed since that kind of birth will never be among my experiences. Then I found this video on F-Bomb's blog, and all is better now. I've never before actually been grateful for a C-section. (Warning: the forceps segment will make you squirm).

Really, there's nothing else to say.

Perhaps I shouldn't have watched that. . . .

It was interesting to see the vacuum thing--my sister had that when my niece decided to start the stubborn streak in utero and not descend. I had it looking quite a bit different in my mind. :)

Ok, this did make me glad I had c-sections! Some things should not be watched right after eating.

I've always been somewhat suspicious of home births, even though I have a friend who practices homebirth midwifery and many friends who have gone this route. Worst-case scenario in the past seemed to be a last-minute trip to the hospital for babies that just wouldn't come on their own. But recently a friend's baby suffered permanent damage during the birthing process, lack of oxygen, probable brain damage, and unknown developmental delays (baby is a few months old and doesn't cry yet). These friends will never know if they might have had another outcome by opting for a hospital birth. Very difficult situation. I'm grateful for my hospital deliveries.

Hey, Luna, I'll get around to posting again if you get around to posting again!

Also, Emily was born using foreceps. And she cried an awful lot those first two weeks. And I got torn to smithereens. And I cried an awful lot those first two weeks. Having seen this video, I now completely understand why.
